Gennady Golovkin is expected to be among the eager spectators this Saturday when Miguel Cotto faces off against Canelo ‘Saul’ Alvarez at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.
Golovkin is the mandatory challenger to the WBC middleweight belt which was just recently stripped from champion Miguel Cotto for his failure to settle the $300,000 sanctioning fee as reported by ESPN.
Cotto was given a deadline last Monday to settle the fees but apparently his camp found the fees to steep.
The Puerto Rican is still technically the lineal champion, but there will be some odd things happening this weekend depending on the outcome.
One is that if Alvarez wins, he is eligible to get the title and possibly face Golovkin next.
If Cotto wins, he will remain the lineal champion but Golovkin will be the one to be elevated as WBC full titlist.
So as we can see, the scenarios have changed dramatically though Triple G is ready for either fighter.
There are however many who believe that Cotto will never set foot in the ring against Golovkin which in all becomes a shame. But nevertheless, it looks like Triple G is not giving up on fighting the 35-year-old Puerto Rican fighter totally just yet.
"I want his belt. I hope he wants a fight with me because it's more money, good deal for us, more popularity. He says just one more year (in boxing) so it's perfect time," Golovkin says via Boxingscene.com
The same holds true for Alvarez who he believes is ripe and ready to face him possibly next year if the Mexican does indeed come out on top.
The Cotto vs. Alvarez fight, despite all the off-ring events, promises to be a humdinger with both fighters known to take it to their opponents in the past.
Cotto carries the experience while Alvarez brings his explosiveness to the ring this Saturday.
Cotto is expected to try and frustrate Alvarez in the early goings. Trainer Freddie Roach revealed that such was their game plan as they try to take the legs of Alvarez out before exploding in the middle to later rounds.
Whatever strategy both Cotto and Alvarez will employ, expect Triple G and his camp to pay close attention as well.
For his part, Golovkin feels that Alvarez has a slight advantage and someone he considers more dangerous than Cotto.
Regardless, it seems that Triple G could care less of who comes out this Saturday. For him, it is all about unifying the belts and right now the WBC title is the only one missing around his waist.
