Six musical acts took the lead in the 2013 Grammy nomination ceremony, hosted by Taylor Swift and LL Cool J, on Wednesday night in Nashville, Tenn. New artists Fun. and Frank Ocean joined Mumford & Sons, Black Key's Dan Auerback and rappers Jay-Z and Kanye West as the most nominated musicians, each earning six nods.
Fun., a New York indie pop group, was nominated for Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Best New Artist, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and Best Pop Vocal Album. The band, which performed during the nomination ceremony held in Nashville, Tenn., tweeted, "Unreal night. Thank you for listening. BTW the arrangement of W.A.Y. we just did was by my favorite composer, Nico Muhly. -andrew."
Frank Ocean, which broke into the larger musical scene this year, also received nominations for Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Best New Artist, Best Urban Contemporary Album, Best Rap/Sung Collaboration (with Jay-Z & Kanye West) and Best Short Form Music Video. The R&B singer simply tweeted, "wow....." after being nominated.
Mumford & Sons, the rock group that has dominated the charts with their new album Babel, scored nods in Album of the Year, Best Rock Performance, Best Rock Song, Best Americana Album, Best Song Written for Visual Media and Best Long Form Music Video.
Rappers Jay-Z and Kanye West shared several nominations, including Best Rap Performance, Best Rap/Sung Collaboration (with Frank Ocean), Best Rap Song and Best Short Form Music Video. The two also had separate nominations in Best Rap Performance and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration.
While the nominees enjoyed the recognition from the Recording Academy, the Grammys snubbed other big name artists. Canadian pop star Justin Bieber came up empty handed, along with boy band One Direction, rapper Nicki Minaj and R&B singer Usher.
After congratulating new Canadian singer Carly Rae Jepsen for her two Grammy nominations, Bieber's manager Scooter Braun had a Twitter outburst about the Grammys snub of Bieber. He wrote, "this time there wont be any wise words, no excuses, I just plain DISAGREE. The kid deserved it. Grammy board u blew it on this one." The manager later took a break from his outburst to congratulate British singer Ed Sheeran for his first Grammy nomination.
The 55th Grammys will air on February10, 2013 at 8 p.m. EST on CBS.
