Los Angeles Clippers forward Blake Griffin knows that at his position, things could get a bit chippy, and in most cases, lead to unfortunate altercations.

Although this is going to downplay the capabilities of the NBA and its officials to take control of untoward physical altercations, Griffin believes that learning a thing or two from UFC lightweight fighter Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone could go a long way.

Griffin is no stranger to such. There have been numerous instances in the past that he has gotten his share of physical play that almost got out of hand had cooler heads not prevailed. Therefore, as a precautionary measure, being ready for such dirty tactics or low blows is something that could be wise to invest in.

The NBA has had its share of fights even from the greats. Larry Bird and Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson went at it during their time.

Then, there is that celebrated brawl in Detroit that involved Ron Artest and Ben Wallace. Artest has been known to be a tough defender and someone who will try to get on his opponent’s head. That was an unforgettable moment that went as far as involving some nearby fans.

The list goes on, and the thing is that basketball is a very physical game that could sometimes lead to unforgettable confrontations. Although many may not see what really goes on in the hardcourt, Cerrone was apparently surprised at the things that go unseen when games are played.

“I didn’t realize that much dirty play was involved in basketball,” Cerrone said.

Aside from the whole self-defense thing, Cerrone believes that the training Griffin is undergoing could be more beneficial to him on the hardcourt.
“The pushing, the shoving, the pulling, trying to get everyone off axis. So, it’s good for him to find his center and keep under his hips, and his balance is there. He’s not getting pushed off, he’s not getting misled. So I think it will play into his game well,” Cerrone adds.

From the looks of it, it may not be all about Griffin getting ready for the roughhousing he is expected to receive from this NBA season and beyond. The training could go as far as helping him strengthen certain facets that he would need during games.

The next question (weird as it may be) could end up asking if Griffin is planning a career in the UFC. This early, it can be said that the dunking demon has no plans of doing so and that everything is more of a precautionary measure – nothing else!
