Rumors have begun to spread that NBC has recently purchased the rights to "Cruel Intentions", as well as secured a significant commitment from the original director and writer of the movie Roger Kumble.
Variety reports that the TV series will revolve around the now 16-year-old son of Sebastian Valmont (played by Ryan Phillippe in the movie) and Annette Hargrove (played by Reese Witherspoon). The name of the character has been reported to be Bash Casey, and some of his story has already been revealed.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Casey finds his late father's journal and quickly learns of a legacy that he was never told about by his mother. Dash finds himself in need of answers and chooses to trade in his small town Kansas lifestyle in favor of the world of money, power and corruption that is the Brighton Preparatory Academy of San Francisco.
It is yet unclear how Dash comes across the journal or what his mother has to say about it. Fans of the movie might even point out that Dash might not even be Sebastian's child. This is due to the fact that at the end of the "Cruel Intentions" film, Annette was not said be pregnant during the film but the journal was by her side after she drove away after his funeral. This particular plot point should be explained if the makers of the show are to convince fans of the lineage of Dash.
"Cruel Intentions" is one of the many remakes in development for TV and will need to be exceptional to standout from the crowd. Currently, ABC has "My Best Friend's Wedding" and an interesting take on "Fantasy Island" in the works, while CBS is reportedly trying to reboot "Nancy Drew," "MacGyver" and 'Training Day."
The show will have Roger Kumble directing the pilot and co-writing the script, with co-writers Lindsey Rosin and Jordan Ross (who will also serve as executive producers). Currently, there is no news on who will be acting in any of the roles for the show or if any of the original cast members, such as Selma Blair, will reprise their roles.
NBC has not yet released a premire date for the series as the show is still in its developmental stages.
