Clock Boy Ahmed Mohamed Visits White House, to Move to Qatar

Ahmed Mohamed, the 14-year-old who was arrested for bringing a homemade clock to school, finally made good President Barack Obama's offer and paid him a visit at the White House.

"The 14-year-old chatted with the president during astronomy night - an annual event honouring science, space exploration and youthful endeavour - but left the clock that had sparked so many column inches at home," The Guardian reported. "The science-loving Obama, also known as the geek-in-chief, called the space station crew, gazed through a telescope and spoke to Mohamed."

Obama had showed his support for the teenager after it was reported that he was handcuffed after being suspected of bringing a bomb to his school. Mohamed was just trying to impress his teacher with a clock he made in his own home.

"Cool clock, Ahmed. Want to bring it to the White House? We should inspire more kids like you to like science. It's what makes America great," Obama tweeted last month.

The teen has since relayed his gratitude for the US president's support in the wake of the arrest. Before meeting with POTUS, Mohamed told the media that the lesson he took away from the incident is that a person must not be judged by appearance.

"Always judge them by their heart," he said.

Despite the support Mohamed gained in the wake of his arrest, he has since decided to move to Qatar to continue his studies.

"Ahmed Mohamed has accepted a scholarship from Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development, or QF, his family said," CNN relayed.

"Qatar was a cool place to visit," the boy said in a statement. "I loved the city of Doha because it's so modern. I saw so many amazing schools there, many of them campuses of famous American universities. The teachers were great. I think I will learn a lot and have fun, too."

Mohamed and his siblings had withdrawn from his Irving, Texas school after his arrest, with his father saying they will not return to the same institution. The Mohamed family then went on a trip to the Middle East, with Qatar, Sudan, and Saudi Arabia as the main destinations.

Apparently, the trip somehow doubled as school scouting visits.

"Qatar's Education City is a five square-mile site with satellite campuses of American schools such as Georgetown University, Northwestern University, Carnegie Mellon University, Virginia Commonwealth University and Texas A&M University," Mashable said. "Though the family plans to leave in the next few days, Mohamed will reportedly first pick up his confiscated clock from the Irving Police Department."
