A highly unusual sighting of what appeared to be a gigantic city among the clouds hovering over the cities of Foshan and Jiangxi, regions of China, was reportedly captured in a video. The looming figure of the spectral city was said to have also been witnessed by thousands of locals within the area, according to Mirror.
The said footage shows dark-colored images in the shape of skyscrapers, which has also prompted some local news outlets in China to pick up the story. But, some scientists have downplayed the imposing and disquieting apparition amid various speculations that cropped up online. They claim that it is a mere optical illusion which is referred to as "Fata Morgana."
Kenneth Bowman, a professor and atmospheric scientist from Texas A&M University, said in an interview that the illusion is an effect of a big temperature inversion in our atmosphere, notes The Christian Science Monitor. And these inversions in the temperature cause light rays to bounce in ways other than the usual.
He said that you can compare this to looking through a lens where you can see surfaces of distant objects, but in such a way that these surfaces appear to be floating, as was the case in the floating city. This weather phenomenon usually occurs during fall and winter, when there is a higher chance that the ground becomes colder than the air above it, which is opposite the normal case.
Not everyone was convinced, though. The conspiracy theorists have numerous versions of their own to explain the sudden appearance of the mysterious city adrift in the sky. One of the more popular theories is the Project Blue Beam, which asserts that NASA was behind all this. They were said to be using holograms to simulate an alien invasion of the planet, says the DailyMail.
Some people believe that it could be a glimpse of a parallel universe interposed with our own reality. Other theories include a possible looming alien invasion, or China testing its very own holographic technology. While few others dismissed this as just some marketing ploy for an upcoming videogame or sci-fi movie.
There are also those who have remained skeptical of the authenticity of the footage. They were claiming that the footage was probably fake because it is the only one that has surfaced so far.
"If more evidence by others pops up we will know that it was real for sure or a fake. Holographic technology is another option. Beyond that we enter the weird territory of other dimensions, The Matrix, and fill in the blank explanations," says one YouTube commenter with username Wolfen443.
