Sony's patent for a "Hybrid Separable Motion Controller," essentially a Playstation Move controller mixed with a Dual Shock 3, was approved earlier this week, but mum is the word on whether or not the device will ever see the light of day.

Given that we are at the tail end of the current generation of consoles, which some argue that the Wii U has already kicked it off, wishful thinking may lead some to believe that the company's latest patent was filed in preparation for the Playstation 4. However, The Sixth Axis, who originally reported the PDF of the document, note that the it "shows a Cell/RSX configuration on one side, suggesting that the device is likely to be related to a current platform, if it is in fact even planned for release."

Aside from infusing motion controls into the controller, the hybrid is composed of two halves that snap apart and carry their own speaker, vibration, and accelerometer, according to IGN. The patent was originally filed in May 2011, and several sources warn that companies often trademark devices without ever following through on full production.

Neither Sony or Microsoft have confirmed when their next-generation consoles will debut, but common knowledge suggests that both consoles are likely to launch in Fall 2013. Details will likely continue to leak over the following months, and both companies are expected to open up about their respective systems at E3 2013 next summer.
