Despite rumors stating otherwise, it doesn't look like Fox is giving up the rights to the "Fantastic Four" to Marvel Studios after all.
Den of Geek did originally break the news of the transfer to Marvel recently. However, now it seems that the website is retracting its original report. This original report stated that because of the dismal numbers of the latest "Fantastic Four" movie, Fox came to an agreement with Marvel to return the rights to the franchise in exchange for the rights to the two "X-Men" TV series. Also included in the exchange of character rights were Fantastic Four villains Doctor Doom, Galactus and the Silver Surfer.
The two X-Men shows are reportedly going to be called "Legion" and "Hellfire", and are reportedly going to be very lucrative as Bryan Singer has said that "X-Men: Apocalypse" will be the end of the X-Men series of films.
According to the Den of Geek report, Marvel also plans to put a new "Fantastic Four" movie into one of its untitled films of 2020. However, as of now, there is still no news on what exactly Marvel has planned for those untitled films.
The rumor did seem to be true as Marvel recently got rights to use Spiderman in the "Captain America: Civil War" film, as well as the rights to make a solo Spiderman film from Sony. It looked like Marvel was slowly getting back the rights to the characters that it sold off during its financial problems in the early 2000s.
For those who are unaware, Marvel went through a bit of financial problem in the early to mid 2000s, which actually saw the comic giant file for Chapter 11. This led Marvel to sell the movie rights to Spiderman, the X-Men and the Fantastic Four to several other studios.
However, iO9 does report that representatives from 20th Century Fox and from Marvel have verified that the rumor is false and that Marvel's first family will be staying with Fox.
While this does not mean that the "Fantastic Four" will never return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it just means that at least for now, Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Girl, Thing and Human Torch will be staying where they are.
Do you think Marvel should try and get back the rights to the "Fantastic Four?" What do you think should be done to the first family of Marvel? Let us know in the comments below.
