An electrical engineer from California recently created a real-life version of Mjolnir, the mythical hammer of Thor that only the Norse god can lift. Now, two individuals, including the maker, can wield the powerful weapon.
In the comics, only those who are worthy can lift the mighty Mjolnir, which belongs to the Norse God of Thunder, Thor. Whoever is deemed worthy by the hammer will also possess the powers of Thor, according to legend.
PC Mag revealed that Pan Allen, an electrical engineer, embarked on a project to make a replica of the legendary hammer, Mjolnir, which means “The Crusher” or “The Grinder.” He used heavy-duty magnets and a fingerprint scanner to build a working version of the hammer. His version of Mjolnir will only stick to manhole covers and giant metals via a powerful electromagnet he took out of a microwave oven. Allen added four 12v SLA batteries to an Arduino Pro Mini board, a capacitive touch sensor and a solid state relay in the handle. A fingerprint scanner was positioned close to the base of the hammer to read his thumbprints.
The effect – only Pan Allen can wield the might Mjolnir. The magnets will activate once a person holds the leather-wrapped handle. Since the creation only reads the creator’s fingerprints, it will be impossible for anyone to lift the hammer successfully. When Allen’s fingerprints are detected by the sensor, the magnets deactivate and he can easily carry Mjolnir off the ground.
A video showed Allen introducing his amusing invention in Venice Beach.
“So, this thing on the front – it’s a thumbprint scanner. If you’ve got worthy thumbprints, it comes right up.” Pan told the crowd.
Sydney Morning Herald reported that one person, however, succeeded in lifting the hammer by simply sliding it off the metal manhole cover. The magnets stopped working on the concrete and the man was able to bring the weapon up.
The Mjolnir of lore has other abilities as well, such as creating thunderbolts and boomeranging back to Thor after he throws it. Allen will have to work on his project more to make his replica more interesting.
Pan Allen seems to be fond of creating mythical weapons from shows and comic books. He made another weapon called a “Rasengan” from the popular manga series “Naruto.” The invention allowed his younger brother to create a ball of blue energy in his hand just like the ninja character, based on the same Sydney Morning Herald report.
