WWE Hell in a Cell is just about two weeks away and while all the attention seems to be focused on the rubber match involving Brock Lesnar and the Undertaker, there are several title matches set on for the upcoming WWE pay-per-view.
Seth Rollins will defend his WWE Heavyweight title against Kane, The New Day will once again defend their Tag Team titles against the Dudley Boyz and Charlotte will defend her Divas title against former champion Nikki as well as Kevin Owens squaring off against Ryback for the Intercontinental title.
From that list, it remains to be seen who United States Champion John Cena will be facing. Big E has been rumoured as a possible opponent but seeing that the big guy could be tied up in that tag team title match, fighting twice in one night doesn’t seem likely.
There are also rumors that Dolph Ziggler could be instilled to succeed Cena though such has to be officially made.
With all those matches in store, it will be interesting to see what the WWE plans for Kevin Owens and his Intercontinental title. The IC Title has somehow grown silent lately though the win by Owens over Ryback was something that many had not expected.
Ryback lost the IC title after a rake in the eye which allowed Owens to steal the victory and now it remains to be seen if he can reclaim that title.
The development does come as a surprise considering the disappointment the WWE had when Owens was feuding with John Cena earlier this year. He was relegated to the middle cards until that stunning win at WWE Night of Champions.
Could Owens be getting another push from the WWE? Well it certainly looks like it.
If so, their tiff at WWE Hell in a Cell could indicate that he retains the title.
Retaining the title would make sense. Owens is no overnight star and apparently fending off the Big Guy could suffice for now to see if Owens can add some more color which could do its small part in the sagging ratings of the WWE.
Unless Ryback comes up with a pretty dominating performance and Owens opting to fight clean, the belt doesn’t seem to be changing hands at least for now.
Owens can only lose the title if he submits or is pinned meaning a disqualification or count out will allow him to keep the Intercontinental title.
It may be a cheap way to hold on to the belt but right now it seems the brash Canadian has been given a new push at the main cards. For how long would depend on what the WWE creative team decides though it may not be surprising if he hangs on to it until Wrestlemania 32.
