After over a decade, Disney has finally confirmed the date for the release of the sequel to its animated super hero family movie "The Incredibles."

According to Deadline, in an announcement that also included the dates for most of the Phase 3 movies for Marvel, Disney shifted its Pixar and animated film schedule to accommodate "The Incredibles 2." In total, 19 films were either given a new title or had their release dates changed by Disney. While it is not uncommon for a studio to change its release dates, it is rare to see a film schedule changed this much.

Comic Book Resources reports that the official release date is now June 21, 2019. This means that by the time the sequel finally comes out, it will have been almost 15 years since the original movie. The schedule on the Disney / Pixar side includes the movie "Toy Story 4" from June 2017 to June 15, 2018, "Cars 3", which has been given the June 2017 slot, and the previously untitled slot for Nov. 22, 2017 has been given the name "Coco."

However, is "The Incredibles 2" ready for production? Director Brad Bird, who has been with the project since the beginning, states that he is nearly done with the first draft of the script. He says that he has had to revise it several times to keep up with the movie landscape. Bird states that when the first "Incredibles" movie came out, there were only two other superhero franchises out: "X-Men" and "Spiderman."

Bird says with the increase of superhero films, the job of writers has become more difficult as they do not want their film to be in the same setting as another or fall prey to the same clichés over and over again. Bird states that he is trying to focus the movie on what really made "The Incredibles" so good in the first place---characters and their relationships with the other characters in the movie.

Many have wondered why it has taken Disney so long to make a sequel to "The Incredibles" seeing how the first movie grossed US$631 million worldwide against a budget of US$92 million. Many are also wondering if the movie is still current as 15 years is a long time and much of the target audience may no longer be familiar with the characters.

Has Disney, for the first time, missed a golden opportunity? Fans will have to wait for "The Incredibles 2" to find out.
