Weeks after the devastation of Hurricane Sandy along the East Coast, organizations continue their efforts in providing funds and time towards rebuilding and supporting the communities most affected. In Miami, Power Rockaways Resilence is teaming local musicians, surfers and environmentalists to raise funds to purchase solar powered generators for residents affected by the storm in the Rockaways, New York.
The event, being held on Wednesday night from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. EST in Midtown Miami, will feature acoustic performances by Brendan O'Hara, Big Brooklyn Red, Vincent Raffard and Cat Shell. The night will also include a screening of a documentary by the Rockaway Surf Club called "Shadows of the Same Sun."
In a statement released last Wednesday, Walter Meyer of the Power Rockaways Resilence said, "The focus of this effort is not just about sustainability, but about resilience. We see the need on the ground in the Rockaways daily. The generosity of our friends in Miami will supply heat and power to alleviate suffering now, and will provide resiliency later."
According to the statement, event goers will also be able to chat with volunteers up in New York through a live Skype connection. The benefit looks to finance solar generators to replace electrical systems ruined by the storm. "Solar generators can deliver power and heat to critical locations in the Rockaways, and can continue to supplement the grid with resilient power after the utilities power up again."
The Miami fundraiser will take place on Nov. 28 from 7-11 p.m. at Lagniappe House (3425 NE 2nd St., Miami, Fla.). There is a suggested donation of $10 per person.
