Speculation surrounding the new Star Wars films is rampant, but with pre-production well underway, we are beginning to see a clearer picture of which direction the infamous saga will take.
First off, the director. Matthew Vaughn, the director of X-Men: First Class and Kick Ass, has been long rumored to helm Episode VII. Jason Flemyng, a regular cast member on Vaughn's films, added fuel to the fire in a recent interview with HeyUGuys, which can be viewed below. While far from concrete evidence, Flemyng's off the cuff acknowledgement of the director's involvement in the franchise certainly supports claims that Vaughn is in serious talks with Disney.
Behind the scenes, it appears that Star Wars may use Marvel's Avengers model as a template for the new Star Wars installments. According to the Hollywood Reporter, via IGN, "while [Star Wars writer alums Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinsberg] have indeed been hired to work on the Star Wars franchise, they will be writing separate projects, not necessarily Episode VIII and Episode IX."
The site adds, "Their scripts could turn into official 'Episodes' in the main Skywalker storyline, or they could form the basis for spinoffs focusing on side characters. Disney CEO Robert Iger said the goal is to release a Star Wars movie 'every two to three years,' and some could easily focus on other pieces of the expansive mythos. Disney and Lucasfilm declined comment. "
Only time will tell if any of these rumors pan out, but one thing is certain: Disney has ambitious plans for the Star Wars franchise.
