On November 28, Michael Grandage's "Don Giovanni" returns to the Met for seven performances. This year the Met has put together a cast filled with rising stars and two established singers.
The opera follows the character of Don Giovanni, a libertine and seducer who accidentally kills Donna Anna'a father. The story unfolds as Anna and her lover Don Ottavio seek revenge. Meanwhile, the Don seeks out more conquests to fulfill his sexual satiation.
On the heels of his successful Figaro in Le Nozze di Figaro, Russian Bass-Baritone Ildar Abdrazakov plays the iconic role for the first time at the Met. Erwin Schrott who once played the role of the Don at the Met takes on the role of Leoporello, Don Giovanni's sidekick and faithful servant. Rising star coloratura soprano Susanna Phillips plays Donna Anna and Emma Bell returns to the Met after a three year absence in the role of the scorned Donna Elvira.
American tenor Charles Castronuovo plays the role of Don Ottavio. Ekaterina Siurina plays the role of the coquettish Zerlina with David Soar as her fiancé Masetto. Rounding out the cast Raymond Aceto sings the Commendatore.
English conductor Edward Gardner leads the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra in Mozart's most famous score.
Don Giovanni will be performed on November 28, December 1, 5, 8, 11, 15, 20.
