Back April this year, Robert Downey Jr., otherwise known as Iron Man, revealed that Spider-Man "may well be" in the new "Captain America" sequel.
"I hear they're looking to cast a new Spider-Man," ScreenRant quoted him as saying.
This revelation fueled rumors that the web slinging superhero may very well be swinging his way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Further, an insider told The Wall Street Journal earlier this year that Spidey will appear in "Captain America: Civil War", which will be released next year. This is after Walt Disney Co. and Sony Corp. managed to reach an agreement to share rights to Spider-Man's appearance in films - a welcome development that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige is happy about.
"Making that agreement ... was great, and was really amazing, and on a personal level making these movies, it means a lot because I think we can do great things with Spider-Man," he said, as noted by IGN.
Sounds like Spidey's really going to be rubbing elbows with the rest of the Marvel heroes!
"I think Spider-man can serve great purpose in our universe and that's where he belongs," Feige went on. "That was what was unique about him in the comics was not that he was the only superhero in the world; it's that he was a totally different kind of superhero when compared against all the other ones in the Marvel universe at the time."
Although Feige admitted making a "Spider-Man backup plan" that put him into a Marvel movie, he said that "the most important thing is relaunching Spider-Man with his own standalone movie and a story line that fits into this universe," as also reported by Variety.
"The connectivity is great, but doesn't drive the train," he added, clarifying that the web slinger will still star in standalone flicks.
So, if Spider-Man will indeed be in "Captain America 3," where will he pop up and what kind of role will he play in the superhero-packed movie?
According to CinemaBlend, Spidey may only do a cameo in the flick, which may be disappointing to fans.
"If Spidey had a large role to play, he probably would have had to be there from the start of production," the site speculated, on why this bit of news may be logical.
"The character was only announced as being a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe a few months ago, and the film has been in the works for more than a year," CinemaBlend added. "Lastly, we can't forget that the Joe and Anthony Russo-directed feature has an absolutely gigantic cast as it is, and it was always going to be a challenge for the friendly neighborhood superhero to compete for screentime with Chris Evans' Captain America, Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man, Chadwick Boseman's Black Panther, and many others."
