An unidentified gunman opened fire at Oregon's Umpqua Community College on Thursday morning, killing 10 and wounding at least 20 others, according to Oregon State Police spokesman Bill Fugate.
Preliminary reports say the shooter began in a science classroom before working his way up, leaving "multiple patients in multiple classrooms" by the time they were apprehended by law enforcement.
Of 11 patients taken to local hospital Mercy Medical Center, two have died, according to Douglas County Fire Marshal Ray Shoufler who spoke with CNN by telephone. He didn't disclose if this was part of the initial death toll.

"A lot of locals have taken classes here, got degrees here," Shoufler said. "Everybody knows everybody." Umpqua, located six miles north of rural city Rosenburg, houses just over 13,500 students, a majority of which attend part-time. The median student age last calendar school year was 38, as stated on the school's website, and females make up about 58 percent of the population.
Triage, or injury response, centers were set up on campus after police cleared the area, and unharmed students were loaded onto three buses destined for the Douglas County Fairgrounds. The Douglas County Sheriff's Office received a call of an active shooter at 10:38 a.m. local time and immediately called on the public to stay away from UCC. "Active shooter at UCC. Please stay away from the area," Fire District No. 2 that serves Douglas County tweeted a few minutes later.

UPDATE 2:00 p.m. PST: Oregon Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum told NBC News that the gunman is dead. The death toll is now 13 people.
At a press conference, Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin said the unnamed shooter was killed in a firefight with police. Gov. Kate Brown added that it was a 20-year-old male.
