The Wii U may have sold 400,000 systems during its first week on the market, but the aging Xbox 360 trumped Nintendo's new console with 750,000 sales during the same time period, reports IGN.
The Big N learned its lesson with the 2006 Wii launch and has made efforts to meet consumer demand more readily this year.
"Wii was a unique phenomenon. You couldn't walk into a retailer and buy a Wii until spring of 2009. We've certainly learned many lessons from that and we are replenishing retailers more quickly this time around. We are looking to have as much product into retail as possible. It's driven by consumer response," says Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. "Wii U is essentially sold out of retail and we are doing our best to continually replenish stock. Retailers are also doing their best to get the product to store shelves. But as soon as the product hits retail, they're selling out immediately."
Within a week of its launch, Nintendo sold 600,000 original Wii consoles in 2006, without even coming close to meeting consumer demand. Only time will tell if the Wii U captures the mainstream audience in the same way as its predecessor did years ago.
Alongside boosted Xbox 360 sales, Microsoft commends Halo 4 for exceeding "expectations with impressive sales." The company details that Xbox Live Gold subscriptions also soared higher than 50 percent in contrast to last year.
