The 1973 horror classic, 'The Exorcist,' will be remade! The confirmation came from Morgan Creek CEO Jim Robinson.
The confirmation of the 1973 classic remake came with the news that Robinson has sought out the service of investment banking group Houlihan Lokey in selling the domestic rights of the Morgan Greek production library of 78 films. Robinson said that even with sales of the library, the production house would retain the remake rights for a couple of its films, including the whole of "The Exorcist" franchise.
Asked by Deadline, if this meant that a remake of "The Exorcist" is already in the works, Robinson responded with a resounding "Yes!" In fact, some concepts are already pitched in for "The Exorcist" future remake, Robinson told Deadline. The production house is also retaining all rights for possible TV series remakes. It will also retain remake rights of the films "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective," "Major League," "Young Guns" and "Flying Tigers."
Robinson told Deadline that the money that could come from selling the library will go straight in its film production fund. "I'm selling the library strictly for economic reasons. It will go back into the company to fund more production. We have a number of properties that we are looking to move forward on," the CEO said.
The confirmation of "The Exorcist" remake might not have reached all of its fans yet but director William Friedkin had already hinted about his objection. In a tweet, the award-winning director said "I mention it only in passing, but I don't believe Morgan Creek has rights to THE ORIGINAL, only the so-called sequels."
Interestingly, some of the fans of the horror film shared the same opinion to that of Friedkin. Marco Monteiro said it was a relief to hear that Morgan Creek could not possibly do a remake of the original. "No one can improve on perfection, Mr. Friedkin. The original should never be remade," he tweeted. Joe Stone also finds it good news, tweeting "the original is perfect and a part of history." Gatafilm also hopes that the original "The Exorcist" will not be the subject of the remake confirmed by Robinson. "Your film is a masterpiece and no one can remake a masterpiece," Gatafilm tweeted. Nick Smith tweeted "touching your film will be akin to blasphemy."
"The Exorcist" tells the story of a 12-year-old girl possessed by demons and her mother's attempts of treating her through an exorcism conducted by two priests. The film is adapted from a novel by William Peter Blatty that was inspired by a true story that happened in the late 1940's.
