"Wolverine 3" will be the last of the ageing Hugh Jackman as the fan-favorite fast-healing bladed mutant Wolverine. However, before he bids his farewell, Jackman has given his suggestion of who could play the role if Twentieth Century Fox brings back the character.
In an interview by MTV while promoting his new movie "Pan", Jackman was asked about who he thinks could take the reins of Wolverine from him where he responded that Tom Hardy "would be great" for the role.
"That's a great question. I haven't given it a lot of thought. I've been asked the question a lot and I'm always like "I don't want to make it too easy on the studio to replace me." I've still got one more to do. I'm sure they're already talking about it, that some actor out there they've already said "shhhh... keep it quiet but we want you next. He's younger than me for sure, I think Tom Hardy would be a great," Jackman said in the MTV interview.
According to Screen Rant, Hardy could very well play the role of Wolverine as he is no longer new in the comic book and action movie genre having previously play as Bane in the "The Dark Knight Rises" and the iconic Mad Max in the Geroge Miller film "Mad Max: Fury Road" (2015).
However, the entertainment news website pointed that if Hardy, who is already 36, was selected, it would not give the studio enough time to produce multiple movies as they would aim for recasting a character.
Screen Rant furthered that in "X-Men: Days of Future Past," it was already planned to introduce two Wolverines, one with a younger version, that could have give way to a potential new Wolverine. However, with that plan no longer an option, the site suggested that the studio can use the "time travel" or "alternate universe" plot to re-introduce a new Wolverine.
Nonetheless, the site also mentioned that if Twentieth Century Fox plans to continue with the introduction of younger stars taking the roles of Cyclops, Jean Grey, Jubilee, Nightcrawler and Storm, re-introducing Wolverine could take time.
As of now, the only thing definite is "Wolverine 3" will be Jackman's last as the Wolverine. The movie will revolve around a "father-and-son" story between Professor X and Logan/Wolverine and will be a tie-in to the 2016 "X-Men: Apocalypse."
"X-Men Apocalypse" will open in theaters on May 27, 2016 while 'Wolverine 3" will follow roughly a year after on March 3, 2017.
