The "Resident Evil" franchise has been the lone gem in Hollywood adaptations of popular video games. Now on its sixth and possibly last installment, the movie promises to be all out.
According to a report by Screen Rant, film production company Screen Gem has confirmed the supporting cast for the new chapter of the franchise aptly titled 'Resident Evil: The Final Chapter."
Iain Glen (Dr. Sam Isaacs) and Shawn Roberts (Albert Wesker) will be returning in the movie while Ruby Rose, Eoin Macken and William Levy will also be joining them on a yet undefined roles.
The report also confirmed that Ali Larter will reprise her role in "Extinction" and "Afterlife" as Claire Redfield, alongside the film's star Milla Jovovich playing the role of the hybrid human/creature Alice.
As cited by the said entertainment news outlet, the storyline of the final part of the franchise aims to bind all "loose ends" from the previous chapters. It pointed that the movie will continue in the "cliffhanger" ending of "Resident Evil: Retribution," where Alice will fight Umbrella Corporation's evil AI, Red Queen, who is planning to use bio-weapons to lead humanity to extinction.
Previously, the same site mentioned that "Resident Evil 6" will also connect Alice and Claire's overlapping story where some characters such as Li Bingbing as Ada Wong, Johann Urb as Leon S. Kennedy, and Wentworth Miller as Claire's older brother Chris Redfield, will possibly make a return.
"We are not allowed to say one thing. I am held to secrecy, but what I can tell you is that the script is amazing. They're really wrapping up the whole series, so that just makes it a little more poignant. To be able to come back and reprise my role as Claire and my relationship with Alice, with Umbrella Corp. - you know, I'm excited to get back in it. I think the fans are just going to be beyond excited," Ali Larter told IGN when asked recently about the details of the film.
"Resident Evil: The Final Chapter" was supposed to start filming last 2013 before being moved to 2014, only to be moved again this 2015 due to the pregnancy of Jovovich. The project will now start shooting this September 2015 in South Africa with writer/director Paul W.S. Anderson taking the helm.
The movie is scheduled to be released on US theaters on Jan. 27, 2017 - a date that breaks the September release tradition of the previous installments of the franchise.
