The sequel to "Pacific Rim" rumored to be titled "Pacific Rim 2: Maelstrom" has been put on hold, indefinitely. Nonetheless, fans of the Jaeger versus Kaijou battle can still hope for the return of the franchise.

According to a report by Entertainment Weekly (EW), the film's writer-director Guillermo del Toro believes that the movie will still push through, claiming that the movie has only been "moved further."

Moreover, although the director did not specify the length of this delay, he hinted that it might take some time before they start the project saying that he "may do another movie in the middle."

"We are still turning in a screenplay and a budget in three weeks. As far as I'm concerned, it's not gone. We're still on it," del Toro shared in the interview with EW.

However, EW furthered in the report that del Toro is no longer new to delayed projects with some of his blockbuster movies still hanging, waiting for a continuation.

"I can tell you this, if I was a billionaire, I would definitely do Hellboy 3, Pacific Rim 2, and At the Mountains of Madness. And I would quickly become a millionaire," del Toro told EW.

Previously, the movie, which was supposed to start shooting this November for an August 2017 release date, has been reported to be "halted indefinitely" with Universal Pictures and Legendary Pictures still undecided if it will continue or completely cancel the sci-fi action sequel.

As pointed by Screen Rant, the delay of the movie was expected in a financial perspective. The site pointed that even though it rakes in $401 million worldwide, it only made $101 million in US despite having a $190 million budget exclusive of the marketing and promotional costs.

The movie and TV news site even suggested that "Pacific Rim" is better off without a sequel, given that the movie does not have enough "mainstream appeal" that would warrant a need for a second installment. Not to mention that its big-budget requirement makes it a big gamble for the studios producing it.

If the movie pushes through, it is rumored that "Pacific Rim" stars Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi who acted as Jaeger co-pilots Raleigh Becket and Mako Mori, respectively, will be back, together with the other survivors in the first movie.

"Pacific Rim 2," however, will not be an immediate follow up from the events of "Pacific Rim" but instead will take place a few years after the first film.
