"X-Men" director Bryan Singer has announced his next project, which was revealed to be none other than the epic story of Captain Nemo in "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea."
The director disclosed his involvement in the movie through his Instagram account, where he showed the cover of the script that also celebrated his 50th birthday. Singer said that the iconic Jules Verne book has been a story he has wanted to retell since his childhood. He believes that he can bring to the story several angles that have not been told before.
X-Men fans should not worry, however, because according to Deadline, the director does not have any plans of leaving the franchise anytime soon. In fact, Singer states that he is actually very excited for the upcoming "X-Men: Apocalypse", which is due out May 27, 2016.
Currently, the movie has not been picked up by any studio for distribution and budgeting but Singer has shown the script to Fox Studios, so expect that there may be a frenzy for the picture to be picked up by a studio soon. Singer wrote the script alongside Rick Sordelet and Dan Studney who are credited with the screenplay. Studney is most recognized for his work with another book adaptation of "James and the Giant Peach."
"20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" was most notably done by Disney in a live action take in 1954. The film starred Kirk Douglas and James Mason. The movie went on to win several Academy Awards for Best Art Direction and Best Special Effects.
The story revolves around Captain Nemo and his special vessel, the Nautilus. The Nautilus is actually the first time that a version of a submarine was featured during the 1800s. The Captain and his crew went on several adventures tracking a mythical creature that resembled a whale.
The book handled several controversial subjects for its time. Captain Nemo himself has been said to be a recluse who placed himself and his crew in a self-imposed exile from the world and treated the Nautilus as a sovereign nation independent from the world's government.
Currently, there are no actors attached to the film as there is no studio that has picked up the project. However, expect that the script will be picked up soon as Singer is still considered a topnotch director.
