Donald Trump would be our next president of the United States if the election were held today, according to a SurveyUSA poll conducted earlier this month.
Trump - the real estate magnate whose alienated Democratic and Republican lawmakers alike - would narrowly defeat Hillary Clinton in a head-to-head matchup, 45 percent to 40 percent. He would beat Bernie Sanders by four percent and uncommitted contender Joe Biden by two percent.
The numbers are surprising in that Trump drew primarily unfavorable rating when he announced a presidential bid in June. A CNN sample of voters found he trailed Clinton by a 59 percent to 34 percent margin at the time.
Additionally, voters were asked whom they believed would be each party's presidential nominee. Pollsters found that 44 percent of respondent Clinton would be the Democratic Party nominee; 30 percent though Trump would represent Republicans.
Trump and Clinton spent Saturday trading insults, one day after poll results were released.
"Mr. Trump insults, he dismisses women ... he has been throwing a lot of heat my way," Clinton told Portsmouth, New Hampshire supporters. "That's fine; as Jeanne said, I can take it. But I do find a lot of what he says pretty ridiculous."
"If it's all the same to you, Mr. Trump, I would rather you stop cherishing women and start respecting women," she added.
Trump fired back in a string of tweets knocking both Clinton and GOP presidential candidate Jeb Bush.
"Hillary Clinton made a speech today using the biggest teleprompter I have ever seen. In fact, it wasn't see through glass, it was black," Trump tweeted, continuing "Hillary said such nasty things about me, read directly off her teleprompter...but there was no emotion, no truth. Just can't read speeches!"
