During the 1990s, the children's television network Nickelodeon debuted a lineup of cartoons called "Nicktoons." These shows were very well received and lasted several seasons.
While the shows have been long cancelled, the network still shows the cartoons in syndication on the channel. For many young adults, these cartoons were their childhood, and with the intense wave of 1990s nostalgia at arguably its height, Nickelodeon is looking for ways to revive the beloved characters.
According to Tracking Board, Nickelodeon and Paramount Pictures are in the early stages of negotiation to bring all the characters back in an "Avengers" type cross-over film. These rumors supposedly stem from the fact that Nickelodeon Pictures is a subsidiary of Paramount, and dealings with the two studios should not take long.
Just imagining the Rugrats teaming up with the kids from "Hey Arnold!", "Doug" or the characters from "AHHH Real Monsters," "Ren and Stimpy," or even the "Angry Beavers" is something that would make anyone excited.
Variety reports that the president of content and development at Nickelodeon has gone on to say that the higher ups at Nickelodeon have been trying to bring back past ideas---shows that were loved dearly, but in a fresh new way. Hicks goes on to say that the characters from these shows may not get a total reboot of their series, but would make an appearance most likely in movie or TV special form.
Hicks has said that the network is currently retrieving the rights to the various shows and characters so that they can be used in the future. Hicks has said that the fan base for these shows is actually quite large, and that fans have been clamoring for something new from their beloved shows for a long time.
Tracking Board also reports that Paramount is also considering how to use the characters in a way that does not take away from the original source. This could be a daunting project as there are just so many good characters to take from these shows.
The biggest concern of fans would probably come in the form of how the characters would actually be displayed in the future film or television special. Normally, movies would bring an updated or modernized form of older character, which usually doesn't sit well with audiences. If this project is to be done correctly, there has to be a balance of the old and the new.
