A beluga whale named Juno recently took the spotlight from Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy during a press conference held at the Mystic Aquarium Wednesday.
"During the entire 15-minute press conference, which was held conveniently in front of a beluga whale enclosure, Juno decided he needed some attention and proceeded to photobomb Mystic Aquarium and Sea Research Foundation President and CEO Stephan Coan, as well as Gov. Dan Malloy, the entire time," Mashable reported.
"The whale, seemingly intrigued by the cameras, floated directly behind Malloy, sometimes moving back and forth to peer out from behind his shoulders during the 15-minute address," MailOnline said. "Juno also pressed his nose against the 6-inch pane of glass at various times, in an apparent bid to get closer to the action."
"News footage from the event repeatedly zoomed in on Juno, leaving Malloy at the edge of the frame, or out of shot completely," the British publication went on to say.
At some point, Malloy noticed the distraction of the press and turned around to see the culprit. Check out the photo here.
Interestingly, despite the fact that there were three belugas in the aquarium, it was only Juno who hovered behind Malloy.
Perhaps the location choice was all part of the plan? Were the organizers looking forward to the photobombing? After all, this was not Juno's first attempt at photobombing.
"Last summer, Juno was the star of a somewhat controversial viral video, in which he 'teases' a few kids," Mashable recounted. "And he also hung out with a Mariachi band in 2011."
Juno's behavior is characteristic of beluga whales, which are said to be "social animals and very vocal communicators that employ a diversified language of clicks, whistles, and clangs," according to the National Geographic.
No doubt, Juno's photobombing will do Malloy's tourism campaign some good. The governor had said during that attendance at various venues in Connecticut had risen 5% over last year. Will this figure rise further with Juno's recent antic?
It can be recalled that the then 11-year-old beluga whale figured in the news in December 2013 for photobombing a pair of newlyweds, who went to the aquarium for a photo op.
"We paused to fix the dress and the whale happened to come over. My husband and I looked behind us and he was right there, like, 'Hello,'" said Amanda Leigh, the bride, as noted by ABC News.
