For years, fans of the "Star Wars" movie franchise have been watching the spectacular, and sometimes not so spectacular, lightsaber duels that have occurred in movies, cartoons, videos games, etc. However, a popular question that has gone through the minds of many fans is: With proper training, how hard would it be to wield a lightsaber?
Now that question can be answered! Comic book Resources states that a new school dedicated to the martial art of lightsaber dueling has opened in Singapore. The school's name is the Saber Authority, and it teaches students a blend of Asian martial arts and lightsaber training.
According the Saber Authority's website, the main philosophy of the school is teaching its students a practical approach to lightsaber training. The school's core philosophy is that they do not believe in fictional styles or make-believe combat. The Saber Authority has been created for the students to spend their time learning practical self-defense martial arts.
Training at the Saber Authority will typically start off with the basics, such as footwork, foundation strikes as well as lightsaber grips. As the student progresses through the lessons, more advanced techniques such as duel wielding and saber-staff wielding can be learned if the student so wishes.
Saber Authority also acknowledges that this training is not confined to adults only. Anyone can start learning these techniques, from the young to the young at heart. Prices for the lessons start from US$57 per month with a discount for those who already have a lightsaber.
For those who don't own a lightsaber, they are available for custom order via Saber Authority's Lightsaber order page. The sabers are fully combat functional, come in any blade color that the wielder wishes and has battle sounds such as when extending or retracting as well as when it makes contact with other sabers. The most convenient part is that it comes with a six-month extended warranty. Prices for the sabers can range from SGD$700 - $950.
However, the Saber Academy does stress that while students will be learning how to use lightsabers for a realistic combat and self-defense experience, the school does not teach the combat styles that have been made popular in the movies. The styles that are taught in the school have all been created and honed by the teachers of the school.
