Fans of Crayola-colored spandex and crime fighting teenagers rest assured, slowly but surely, more information is being revealed about the highly anticipated Power Rangers reboot for 2017. The plot will be based on everyone's favorite band of teenagers, Jason, Kimberly, Trini, Zack, and Billy. It also looks like execs are planning to bring back everyone's favorite villain, Rita Repulsa, but what about the music? Will the soundtrack be as electric as it was two decades ago?
The 1995 feature film brought along an impressive soundtrack. The Power Rangers Original Soundtrack for the film held notable pieces by Red Hot Chili Peppers (Higher Ground), Van Halen (Dreams), and Fun Thomas featuring Carl Thomas (Kung Fu Dancing).
And of course, the musical accompaniment would not be complete without a full out rendition of the all-too catchy Power Rangers theme song, "Go Go Power Rangers." The memorable crime fighting anthem was performed by the Power Rangers Orchestra, comprised of Eric Martin of Mr. Big, renowned studio guitarist Tim Pierce, John Pierce of "Pablo Cruise," singer-pianist Kim Bullard, and Matt Sorum of "Guns N' Roses" and "Velvet Revolver."
Talk about all-star lineup! That was definitely an awesome way to ramp up the simple yet catchy tune of the colorful teenagers. As Christian Post points out, the involvement of major recording artists and renowned musicians "rendered the songs catchier with new lyrics and longer guitar solos."
The single used to promote the soundtrack was Shampoo's "Trouble" while the commercials marketed the film using both "Trouble" and Snap's hit "The Power".
The Atlantic Records released movie soundtrack was perfectly fitting for the 1995 film, however Crave Online points out, many songs on the nearly hour long LP will not pack a punch for the current reboot.
Crave writes if they had hears the promotional track "Trouble" today they might think it was amusing. Might.
Crave explains, "I might think it's kind of fun. But it's not. It's just as ire-inducing 20 years later as it was back then."
Ouch! However, it seems fair. If Power Rangers wants to capture their now adult audience an upgrade to music would definitely seem necessary. Especially if characters, special effects, and plot lines are getting a reboot.
However, with casting still unknown, music may be one of the last things on the productions team's minds.
