'Sons of Anarchy' fans may have another reason to celebrate with a new rumor saying that the hit series will have a spinoff.
According to a report by The Hollywood Reporter (THR), 'Sons of Anarchy' creator Kurt Sutter is currently developing a spinoff of the FX Production biker drama which will focus on the Mayan Motorcycle Club that has seen a major role in the original seven-season series.
Moreover, since the planned spinoff is in still in the development process, questions about the possible time frame and production as well as the potential return of characters from the Sons series still remain unanswered. It also added that Sutter and his team has not yet tapped any writer to help in the creation of the project as the famed creator has still his hands full acting as the creator, writer, producer, director, and actor, in his medieval-based drama "The Bastard Executioner" which is set for release in September 15.
As explained by the report, the Mayans were initially a California Motorcycle Club that rivals the Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club, Redwood Original (SAMCRO). Led by Marcus Alvarez (Emilio Rivera), majority of members of the Oakland-based group are Mexican-Americans that are operating in the "heroin distribution business." Nonetheless, the two groups went from being rivals to becoming partners both in business, and crime and turf wars.
THR also pointed that Sutter's decision to return to and revitalize the "Sons of Anarchy" drama is a smart move despite being vocal of wanting to try a new genre. According to the report, the series has seen a tremendous growth in each of its season and boasts a continuously growing fan base every year, even citing that the series recorded hit its biggest rating ever last year. It also noted that "Sons of Anarchy" has placed Sutter as one of the most recognizable show runner in the Television industry.
On the other hand, Screen Rant mentioned that this news is not that much surprising considering that the show is FX's highest-rating series in its history, further comparing it to what "Breaking Bad" has made for AMC. According to the report, it is normal for the creator and the studio to look into other aspects of the series that shows potential just like what AMC is doing with the spinoff/ prequel of its "Breaking Bad" series titled "Better Call Saul." It added that doing a spinoff in the angle of Mayans is a solid choice as they have established their characters in the 'Sons of Anarchy" series.
