How does drinking a bottle of cognac within minutes feel?
Apparently, for one female Chinese passenger, it was obviously one intoxicating experience.
A woman surnamed Zhao had drunk a 700ml bottle of Rémy Martin XO Excellence after she was stopped in a Beijing airport for carrying the liquor in her hand luggage. She decided to chug the entire bottle right there and then after fearing that her $200 cognac might go to waste.
“Passengers are prohibited from bringing liquids over 100ml in their hand luggage in China,” South China Morning Post reported.
Unfortunately, the ordeal left her “too drunk to fly,” moving authorities to bar her from boarding the plane. The woman, said to be in her 40s, was about to take a domestic flight to Wenzhou after arriving from the US. She bought the liquor in a US airport.
“She was rolling on the ground, shouting,” a police officer was quoted by The Guardian as saying.
“She was taken back to the airport lounge in a wheelchair and the airport’s medical staff were called to assist her,” the publication added.
A few hours later, the woman woke up and expressed gratitude to the police “for taking care of her,” SCMP said. She was later taken home by her family after they were contacted.
Hennessey, the maker of the liquor in question, had previously revealed that 80% of the company's profit is from Asia. In fact, cognac has “a status symbol amongst China’s new rich” and is “often on allocation mostly because of China,” according to Forbes.
“If 11 percent of China drank one bottle of Cognac per year, the entire Cognac region couldn’t produce of the liquid to meet that demand,” the business and finance news source added.
Considering this, it is not a surprise the Chinese passenger chose to down the entire bottle of cognac rather than surrender it. The drink is apparently alcoholic catnip to consumers in China.
Further, it's also been revealed that about 41.3% of cognac drinkers are actually female, according to the Beverage Information Group. As such, it's the most popular spirit in the said category, with Remy Martin as the leading brand. Forbes, in another piece, noted that the company had declared that 42% of its consumers are female.
With this information, one may wonder what makes cognac the alcohol of choice for that many women.
