All eyes will be on the much awaited megafight featuring Miguel Cotto and Canelo Alvarez that will take place on November 21 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas and among the interested spectators will be former world boxing champion Antonio Margarito.
The American-born Mexican boxer was last seen in the ring on December 3, 2011. The bout, Cotto vs. Margarito II was a follow up to the first meeting that both fighters had on July 26, 2008 which Margarito won via TKO in the 11th round.
In the rematch however, Cotto got payback and won via TKO in the 10th round. Margarito was deemed unfit to continue when Margarito’s right eye swelled shut. It was the same eye that was put into question after suffering damage from a previous fight - that of which was against Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao.
However, it seems that Margarito, 37, has been medically cleared to fight once more and the Mexican boxer is looking to make a boxing return before 2015 comes to a close.
"I already talked to Robert, I train with him, I'm training right now with someone here in San Diego, with whom I have bonded very well, but I know if I want that big fight I should be with Robert,” says Margarito via ESPN Desportes
Margarito will try to get back to competitive form with the help of veteran trainer Robert Garcia. Margarito totes a 38-8 record, 27 of them coming from KOs.
Though there is no word yet on who he would be facing for his return bout, he does bare that he would be looking to face the winner of the Cotto vs. Alvarez showdown this November.
"Yes of course I would go to against one of them, but I know that I must prove that I can compete at that level, I'm not worried because I know I'm to give good fights, I just need the chance to prove it," says Margarito.
If that is the case, that planned bout could come somewhere in 2016. Such could give him more time to get back into shape, seeing that he has been out of action for a total of 44 months.
His immediate goal is to perhaps see if he still has it, fighting at least once (possibly in before the year ends) and maybe take it from there. It will somehow gauge if the former boxing champion can still go toe-to-toe with either Cotto or Alvarez should plans materialize by 2016.
As far as the Cotto vs. Alvarez bout is concerned, Maragarito believes that Alvarez can KO Cotto in 10 rounds.
“I think he [Canelo] has everything to gain and I think he can knock him [Cotto] out around 10 rounds or win on points but he will win,“ says Margarito via Media Tempo
