There is no doubt that there is a resurgence of comic book character popularity. With Marvel and DC fighting for ratings and box-office earnings, the latter seems to have the CW cornered with three of their shows currently airing or soon to be aired.
This puts the CW in a sort of weird situation. This coming fall, two of their hit shows, "Arrow" and "The Flash," are continuing their stories. With "Legends of Tomorrow" debuting this fall, it means that the network must produce three hours of new content each week.
Screen Rant reports that in an effort to prevent the a total take-over of masked characters overshadowing the non-superhero shows, CW President Mark Pedowitz announced that after "Legends of Tomorrow," the DC small screen universe will be put on hold.
This could also be a good thing as not to oversaturate the quickly expanding comic book universe. "Legends of Tomorrow" may also not be as popular as larger characters such as the Flash or Green Arrow. The team on the show will mostly be smaller characters working together to fight super villains - a concept similar to the Power Rangers.
According to Cinema Blend this movie could an effort of the CW to see how the new show holds up to the two other comic book shows. If "Legends of Tomorrow" doesn't hold up in the ratings, the show may get cancelled similar to what happened to NBC's "Constantine."
With the CW putting their DC TV universe on hold, the other new DC super hero show, "Supergirl," will also come under tight scrutiny. While the show does have star power with several veteran actors and actresses piloting the show, fans will have to see if the show's promise holds up. Deadline reports that "Supergirl" was first pitched to the CW but Pedowitz passed on the project.
DC has had plans in the past to start the planning stages on other small time characters that may show-up on "Legends of Tomorrow." Characters such as John Constantine and Hawkgirl are rumored to make cameo appearances on the show. Hawkgirl has been a big player in the past of DC; while the character was on the hit cartoon shows, "Justice League" and "Justice League Unlimited," she has been pushed back into the sidelines as of late.
DC's "Legends of Tomorrow" is set to debut on the CW sometime in 2016.
