The second round of matches may well have given a glimpse into who the eventual champions will be, as well as who may well be falling out of the league come May.
Here's what happened:
Friday, August 14
Aston Villa 0-1 Manchester United
Louis Van Gaal's Man Utd are still dividing fans and experts alike as they continue to struggle to unimpressive victories so far this season. Adnan Januzai's winner on Friday night at Villa Park settled a match that could have gone either way. Villa fans will see the green shoots appearing at their club and will hope new signing Adama Traore will give them the extra attacking threat they lacked against United.
Saturday, August 15th Southampton 0-3 Everton Everton showed their true quality at Saint Mary's on Saturday as Ross Barkley and Romelu Lukaku helped the Toffees to an impressive three goal victory. Roberto Martinez's men have now four points and in current form look like they could challenge for the top four places if they can keep Barkley and Lukaku firing like they were against the Saints.
Sunderland 1-3 Norwich City
Sunderland appear in freefall as they collapsed to their second straight defeat to Premier League new boys Norwich. The Canaries capitalized on a Sunderland defense that conceded four times last weekend and look bereft of confidence. Dick Advocaat looks to have a tough task on his hands to change things around at Sunderland before the Black Cats become engulfed in another relegation battle.
Swansea 2-0 Newcastle
Jerfferson Montero may well be establishing himself as the league's best left back as another inspired performance helped his side claim their first victory of the campaign against a disappointing Newcastle side. Newcastle are undergoing changes with new manager Steve McClaren, but the Magpies look a long way away from the finished product as Swansea were never troubled and threatened throughout.
Tottenham Hostpur 2-2 Stoke City
Leading 2-0 and spurning chances, Spurs fans would have been forgiven for thinking that their side was about to claim its first win of the season on Saturday. A late rally from Mark Hiughes' Stoke side and some poor defending meant that the White Hart Lane faithful had to go home content with a draw as late drama denied them.
Watford 0-0 West Bromwich Albion Watford were left frustrated after failing to break down a West Brom defense despite dominating throughout Saturday's match at Vicarage Road. West Brom were unable to fully impose themselves in the game and came away thankful for the draw after Odion Ighalo wasted several great opportunities for the homeside.
West Ham United 1-2 Leicester City
Having claimed a famous opening day victory over Arsenal last weekend, West Ham would have walked out in Saturday very confident of gaining their second win at home to Leicester, but Claudio Ranieri's men had other ideas. The Fixes were able to dominate midfield and silence the home support, whose only consolation was a first goal for Dimitry Payey which proved to be nothing more than a consolation.
Sunday, August 16th
Crystal Palace 1-2 Arsenal
Arsenal were lifted from their opening day defeat to West Ham by a hard fought victory at Selhurst Park over a Crystal Palace side, which had drawn level just before half time. Arsenal were fortunate of the victory as a late Damien Delaney own goal denied the Eagles the point that they deserved.
Manchester City 3-0 Chelsea In an early sign of strengths Manchester City swept aside an unusually disorganized Chelsea team who were fortunate to keep the deficit down to only three. City were masterful throughout and despite Chelsea raising their levels in the second half were never troubled by the champions. A key match in the title race? We will see.
