The final cast lineup for the "Star Wars: Rogue One" has finally been confirmed. The confirmation was made through the release of the spinoff's first cast photo by Alan Horn, president of Walt Disney Studios on the stage of the D23 EXPO 2015.
According to the D23 EXPO official blog, Horn made his "Star Wars" announcements with an exciting introduction, saying: "There's only one place left to go from here." And that would of course be "a galaxy far, far, away," the blog said.
The first ever cast photo, which was also posted via Disney's official Twitter account, has the movie's main star Felicity Jones at the center. Diego Luna, Riz Ahmed, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen and Jiang Wen could also be seen in the photo.
A separate official announcement from Lucasfilm, posted on Starwars.com, said that "Rogue One" has begun its principal photography and that Gareth Edwards will be directing the spinoff that is being produced by Kathleen Kennedy. "Star Wars: Rogue One" is slated for a Dec. 16, 2016 release, according to the announcement.
The announcement further stated that the plot of the film will follow the journey of resistance fighters coming together "to steal plans to the dreaded Death Star." The "Rogue One" will also take place before the events of the "Star Wars: A New Hope," as explained by the spinoff's producer.
"'Rogue One' takes place before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope and will be a departure from the saga films but have elements that are familiar to the Star Wars universe. It goes into new territory, exploring the galactic struggle from a ground-war perspective while maintaining that essential Star Wars feel that fans have come to know," Kennedy said.
Kennedy had also the nicest words for the director, saying: "Gareth is such an innovative director and I'm so excited to be working with him and the extraordinary ensemble cast he's selected for 'Rogue One.'"
Meanwhile, Jone's character is said to be that of a daughter of the infamous bounty hunter, Boba Fett, Cinema Blend reported. According to the report, Darth Vader had deployed a team of bounty hunters which included Boba Fett. This could mean that Jones, who is also said to be belonging to the resistance fighters, will have a standoff with his very own father in some part of the film. Cinema Blend is guessing that the father and daughter will fight as members of the Empire and the Rebel Alliance, respectively.
