Woody, a toy cowboy voiced by Tom Hanks, will fall in love with the nursery rhyme doll Bo Beep, as announced by Disney's Chief Creative Officer John Lasseter himself. He made the announcement on the first day of Disney's D23 Expo 2015. The event is a bi-annual occasion where Disney officials present exclusive sneak peeks of upcoming films being developed by The Walt Disney Studios and Pixar as well.
Lasseter promised a whole new genre for "Toy Story 4" that has not yet been seen from the past franchises.
"Each of the stories [in the trilogy] is a different genre. 'Toy Story 4' is a genre we've never done in the 'Toy Story' world, and it is a love story. We're proud to announce that it's a love story between Woody and Bo Peep," Lasseter said during the announcement as quoted in D23 Expo 2015 official blog.
According to the blog, Lasseter will be directing "Toy Story 4" with co-director Josh Cooley. The blog further states that the concept of a love story between Woody and Bo Beep is very much close to Lasseter's heart for it was "inspired by his wife Nancy."
In making his introduction, Lasseter highlighted the fact that it has already been 20 years since the "Toy Story 1" was made in 1995. "Toy Story" 1 and 2 were also directed by Lasseter himself. The chief creative officer apologized for making a lot of the audience "feel old all of a sudden."
A live performance of Randy Newman's "You've Got A Friend in Me" capped off his announcement. A song from Newman will also be featured for "Toy Story 4" according to a post from D23 Expo 2015 Facebook Page.
Lasseter has first mentioned about "Toy Story 4" being pegged as a love story back in November of 2014. Speaking with The Los Angeles Times via a phone interview at the time, Lasseter said the next "Toy Story" will pick up from the point where the beloved toy characters were gifted to a young girl, Bonnie. This was the last scene of the "Toy Story 3."
Lasseter told The Los Angeles Times that the concept for the next franchise was brainstormed over lunch in his office in California with his Pixar counterparts Pete Docter, Andres Stanton and Lee Unkrich. Over the last two years, from that brainstorming session, he had already written a sequence treatment with two other writers, Rashida Jones and Will McCormack.
"Toy Story 4" is set for release on June 16, 2017.
