The Dallas Mavericks have reportedly come to terms with 7-footer JaVale McGee, bumping up the number of their list of centers to four.
According to a report from ESPN, McGee has agreed to a two-year deal with a team option on the second year.
The Mavericks beat out the Los Angeles Lakers and the New York Knicks, two teams that tried to get the services of the athletic center who make shot blocking a tantalizing sight to behold.
McGee joins a list of three other centers who could end up fighting for a slot in the regular roster. Aside from McGee, there is also Zaza Pachulia, Samuel Dalembert and Salah Mejri to contend with.
The recent addition of the 27-year-old center should be a big help to the ballclub, especially after that controversial deal that saw DeAndre Jordan have a change of heart after initially agreeing to join the Mavs verbally.
Jordan decided to return to the Los Angeles Clippers after having a heart-to-heart talk with the Clippers and teammates led no less by Chris Paul before the July 9, 2015 contract signing of free agents.
The question now is how healthy McGee is heading into training camp. McGee has been dealing with a leg injury so it will be interesting to see if he can start participating in team practices. But from the looks of it, the Mavericks have done the necessary on McGee’s actual health state and may have found him fit enough.
Pachulia, acquired in a trade with the Milwaukee Bucks, is expected to start for the Mavs at center though his defensive end is put into question. And such is seen as the prime reason why McGee was signed up, to hold the fort defensively for the somehow retooled Mavericks.
It remains to be seen as well if the addition of these big men would be enough to carry the Mavericks at least to the NBA post season.
Before Mark Cuban started signing up players, many shot down the Mavs chances. That was until players like Deron Williams, Wes Matthews, Samuel Dalembert and now McGee were added to the fold. The mix may not be all-star caliber but can certainly compete if head coach Rick Carlisle gets them all on the same page.
McGee has been in the NBA for seven seasons and one thing that Mavericks are hoping is that he keeps his head in the game. The 7-footer has been known to goof off previously though his energy, hussle and defensive ability are positives that any team would love to have.
