They say that life starts at 40 though it remains to be seen if boxing is included in that saying.
But as far as Shane Mosley Jr. and Ricardo Mayorga are concerned, a rematch at 40 could be the beginning of another run in their respective careers.
Mosely and Mayorga will once again face each other on August 29, 2015 in Los Angeles as the two former world champions lock horns once again.
The first time that both fighters squared off was back in July 18, 2008 which saw Mosley winning by knockout with just one second remaining in the final round with Mosley ahead in the scorecards of two judges at that point.
Mayorga and Mosley have been going at it, talking trash on Twitter for quite some time. Now the two former champions will settle the score in the ring by the end of the month with the venue yet to be announced.
The two are so fired up that it seems that they are looking beyond their August 29 tiff.
Just a couple of days ago, Mosley seems to be looking ahead of the Mayorga fight. After Mayorga, Mosely is planning to face former boxers who have handed him losses.
In the list are Floyd Mayweather Jr., Manny Pacquiao, Canelo Alvarez and Miguel Cotto. Most of the names in mention are of course the cream of the crop right now so it remains to be seen if any of them would consider the 43 year old boxer.
On the other end, Mayorga is looking beyond Mosley as well. But unlike Mosley, El Matador is eyeing a fight with former WBC Middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
To make the fight happen, Mayorga will have to beef up and move to the 168 pound weight class. El Matador will be fighting Sugar Shane Mosley at the 158 pound catchweight.
Both Mosley and Mayorga have vowed to win via knockout and it seems that the tension has started to escalate.
The two fighters were at a press conference last weekend and things got a little chippy.
According to Jose Martino of Boxingscene.com, the fracas started when Mayorga allegedly blew smoke in Mosley’s face. Mosley retaliated by slapping the cigarette out of the Nicaraguan’s mouth and so a scuffle followed. A video of that incident can be viewed here.
For the upcoming fight, Mayorga will be looking to even the score with Mosley after almost seven years. He had initially retired back in March 12, 2011 after losing to Miguel Cotto via TKO.
El Matador would however return to the ring, his last fight of which was on December 20, 2014 against Andrik Saralegui which he won via TKO.
Mosley on the other hand is coming out of retirement after nearly two years. He last fought Anthony Mundine on November 27, 2013 where he lost via TKO.
Will Mosley continue to hold Mayorga’s number or will El Matador even up the odds after that forgettable 2008 KO loss?
