Last week, an infographic detailing the effects a single can of Coca Cola has on the body went viral.

Now, health and wellness blog The Renegade Pharmacist has released a second eye-opening graphic debunking theories that Diet Coke is a health alternative. According to blog creator Niraj Naik, Coca Cola's tagline "Regret Nothing: no sugar, no calories" contradicts various bodily ailments - headaches, heart diseases, and depression - the fizzy drink has been linked to.

"From my experience as a community pharmacist helping people to get off medications for metabolic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and obesity, I found if people drink diet sodas they still get the same problem as people who drink normal soda," Naik said. "The research I found from other well respected scientists back up my claims."

The Diet Coke infographic, which can be found on The Renegade Pharmacist's website, tracks effects consumers have over a 60 minute period. Here is a summary of Naik's findings.

In the first 10 minutes: Aspartame - the sweetener used in Diet Coke - tricks your body into thinking you tasted real sugar, causing your pancreas to release insulin.

After 20 minutes: Since the body thinks it just processed sugar, it pulls all available blood sugar into your cells. The lack of sugar makes you reach for another can, causing the cycle to repeat itself. Like regular Coke, this is when insulin sends your body into fat storage mode.

After 40 minutes: Naik compares the ensuing need for Diet Coke to "a short addictive high similar in the way cocaine works." Aspartame and caffeine trigger pleasure areas in the brain that make this combo highly addictive.

After 60 minutes: The can of Diet Coke has depleted minerals and lessened cell hydration levels. Dehydration, in turn, causes fatigue, irritability, and drowsiness, causing you to yet again look for a caffeine fix.

While some of Naik's conclusions are well known, skeptics have raised questions over his accuracy. Few people doubt Diet Coke can lead to an increased waistline but it won't necessarily happen by drinking one can or bottle a day.

"There is nothing healthy or nutritious about diet drinks," said NY Nutrition Group CEO and certified nutritionist Lisa Moskovitz in speaking with Yahoo! Health. "But, if it doesn't exceed more than one can per day, then I don't believe it will cause permanent harm or dehydration."

Similar reaction followed Nair's study on effects of Coca Cola. Then, he said the point of creating the original blog post was solely to call attention to how big brands target children.

A Coca Cola spokesperson responded to Nair's diet cola post by stating, "People have enjoyed drinking a Coca-Cola for more than 129 years. Like all soft drinks, it is perfectly safe to drink and can be enjoyed as part of a balanced diet and lifestyle."
