In her effort to validate Latinos, Kelly Osbourne ended up offending them with what appears to be a rather imprudent remark.
In the wake of businessman Donald Trump's anti-Latino statements, the lavender-haired host took it upon herself to call him out for such comments.
"If you kick every Latino out of this country, then who is going to be cleaning your toilet, Donald Trump?" she said, just after "The View" co-host Rosie Perez said that racist comments are unhelpful.
"Immediately after Osbourne's comment, her co-hosts can be heard reacting in disapproval off-screen to what she said," CNN noted. "Once she realized her co-hosts were not agreeing with her, Osbourne began backtracking her comments."
"Latinos are not the only people to do that," Perez pointed out.
"Come on, you know I would never mean it like that," Osbourne said in defense.
Fortunately, the whole situation was smoothed over so that the show ended on a more positive note. Perez apologized to Osbourne for reacting right away. Osbourne went on to say that the apology was not necessary as she was right to be upset by the controversial statement.
Later, Osbourne issued an apology about her statement via an official statement, as relayed by The Huffington Post:
"I want to start by saying I ALWAYS take responsibility for my actions. In this particular case I will take responsibility for my poor choice of words but I will not apologize for being a racist as I am NOT. I whole-hearted f****** up today. I don't want to bulls**t anyone with lame excuses. Although, I was stopped mid-sentence by Rosie and couldn't finish my point I will not let Rosie take responsibility for my words. I should have known better as I was on 'The View' and it was live. I've learned a very valuable lesson. It is my hope that this situation will open up a conversation about immigration and the Latin community as a whole. By the way I clean my own f****** toilets."
Despite making amends, social media users were not very happy about Osbourne's comment.
"Dear @KellyOsbourne: Almost half of women in LA (48%) are Latinas. And they're not all cleaning toilets," tweeted Jose Antonio Vargas.
This was not the first time that Osbourne has figured in a racial controversy. It can be recalled that she was implicated in a situation during the Academy Awards earlier this year where "Fashion Police" co-host Giuliana Rancic commented that Zendaya Coleman's hair, styled in locs, appeared to smell like weed.
Osbourne has since denied she ever made any such remarks and subsequently quit the show.
