The relationship between Channing Tatum and 20th Century Fox may currently be in jeopardy, leading the spin-off film for the X-Men character Gambit in search for a new lead.

According to TheWrap, "an individual with knowledge of the situation" has claimed that the "Magic Mike XXL" star is planning to exit the comic book project.

While there's no definite word why the actor considers such move, it pegs to have some effect on the film's future. Apparently, one of the main reasons why the movie was heavily fast-tracked was because of Tatum's presence, Cinema Blend said.

Yet Fox seems unstoppable in expanding the X-Men franchise. As told by TheWrap, insiders reportedly suggested that director Rupert Wyatt will soon be in search of a new leading man.

It is also uncertain whether Tatum is leaving the project as producer, together with partner Reid Carolin. A source told TheWrap that Fox and Tatum's team are still in discussions, noting that "something's up."

Fox has had a recent history of allowing previously unthinkable movies go through production. As told by MTV, "Deadpool", which stars Ryan Reynolds as the merc with a mouth, has long been anticipated until it finally came into fruition. The movie is set to debut on February 12, 2016.

Executives were hopeful that the same magic could be recreated for the "Gambit" movie, but if recent rumors surrounding Tatum are to be believed, it could be a challenge.

The character of Gambit has however, made one other movie appearance in the "X-Men" movie universe. The Cajun thief was played by Taylor Kitsch in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine." Gambit is one of the core members of the 90's X-Men and has had several storylines revolve around him. He, most recently, was one of the Four Horsemen of Apocalypse as Death.

Interestingly, the "Gambit" movie was the talk of the recent San Diego Comic Con, and several actresses have been considered for the role to act opposite of Tatum. If Tatum does in fact leave the movie, 20th Century Fox would have to fast track his replacement.

"Gambit" is set to hit the big screen on Oct. 7, 2016.
