When "Furious 7" was given the "go," the producers behind the resilient and long-running action franchise anticipated it to be the start of the "Fast & Furious" films' new trilogy. Although the plan was temporarily sidetracked by the tragic death of Paul Walker, they managed to wrap it up and are now moving forward with "Furious 8."

Very few film franchises have successfully reinvented themselves as often as "Fast & Furious," since its first installment back in 2001. What opened as an unassuming street-racing action series has now subsequently progressed into an international espionage story, and the franchise has repeatedly proven to be valuable with a well-deserved place on top of the box office.

During an interview with Screen Rant, producer Neal Moritz first discussed his upcoming "Goosebumps" adaptation, and the conversation naturally shifted to "Furious 8." He insisted that the film is not due until April 2017 and the team is not planning to hire a director until they have more time to properly develop the screenplay.

Moritz also stressed on how the characters are so important in the franchise and did not forget to mention the late Walker's character, Brian O'Conner.

"We're trying to do what we always do, which is try to come at it from a character point of view and figure out where the characters would go from here," he said. "I think the thing that's made 'The Fast and the Furious' special is obviously we have incredible action and so on. But the thing that people relate to the most is the character. We're lucky that we have a lot of great characters."

"Unfortunately, we don't have Paul anymore. His character... has moved on," he added. "But we feel like there's a lot still to be mined. That's where we're restarting. We're really talking about the characters, where they all sit right now. It's a huge challenge."

It is clear that the project still stands in the planning stages, and Moritz did not want to reveal too much about the direction of the trilogy. However, "Furious 7" was the foundation of a much larger story with the introduction of Mister Nobody, an obscure government agent played by Kurt Russell, and he did confirm the speculation that "Furious 8" will still be a part of a developing trilogy.
