Though he hasn’t made it official, Floyd Mayweather, Jr is likely to end up facing Andre Berto this coming September 12 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Regardless, that hasn’t stopped other boxers from hoping that Mayweather would change his mind, no matter how remote the chance may be.

Amir Khan has tried and apparently resigned to the idea, admitting that it will likely be Berto who Mayweather will face. However, he believes that it will not be Mayweather’s last fight contrary to Floyd’s initial plans.

Khan is convinced that Mayweather will still fight in 2016 and hopefully he will gain the nod. That remains to be seen as there are other fighters trying to market themselves at the undefeated boxer who may imminently be equalizing the boxing record of Rocky Marciano at 49-0.

Everyone knows that aside from Khan, there are other fighters pitching their names in the hat. Shawn Porter, Kell Brook, even Timothy Bradley Jr. have at one time been mentioned.

How about Gennady Golovkin?

Apparently, the Kazakh boxer has joined the party and has even pitched something interesting to Mayweather – dropping down a weight.

Golovkin, undefeated with all of his victories done via knockout, would have been an interesting opponent had he perhaps pitched his name earlier as well as his offer.

His 33-0 record was of course accomplished at middleweight though he is more than willing to drop down to light middleweight if Mayweather moves up to his normal welterweight so that they can both meet halfway.

"He is a great champion," Golovkin said of Mayweather. "Look at me, I'm not big. My last couple of fights, I'm 158, 159lbs. This is possible for me" says Golovkin in an interview.

The thing is, it was better for Golovkin to throw in his name than remaining mum. Though the effort may eventually be for naught, it could still happen in 2016 assuming that Mayweather does not retire after his expected easy fight against Berto.

Based on how Mayweather dealt with his yet-to-be-named opponent, Golovkin would likely be kept hanging just like Khan.

However, if one recalls that supposed ‘solid opponent’ Mayweather was raving about, the Kazakh would have been perfect for that billing.

A guy who holds a 33-0 card (30 via KO) is undoubtedly something that could test Mayweather’s vaunted defensive prowess and hopefully that there would still be time to see that, hopefully in 2016.

Mayweather is expected to make the official announcement (on Berto) any time now especially with reports that both camps are in the polishing stages of making the fight happen. What comes next after September 12 is of course anybody’s guess.
