With his next movie, "Pixel," coming out soon, director Chris Columbus has heavily hinted that two of his previous mega hits, "Goonies" and "Gremlins," are due for reboots.

According to Slash Film, Columbus says it might be a bit difficult to recreate the magic the two movies brought to the big screen back in the 80s. He shares that the cast was one of the biggest reasons that "The Goonies" worked so well. The actors just came together to make magic. With over 30 years since "The Goonies" came out, a sequel would not be possible. Hence, it would have to be a reboot with all new actors. Columbus jokes that he might have to get Josh Brolin, who last played Ronin the Accuser in "Guardians of the Galaxy," to play Brad again if he'd have to do a sequel.

While the actors have gotten a lot older since the original films came out, moviegoers can't exactly write out the possibility of them showing up in the reboot - if these projects push through. The possibility remains though as Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher have all signed on for the new "Star Wars" trilogy and it has been almost 40 years since the original "Star Wars" debuted.

Both movies have had their own stars calling for new additions to the 80s franchises. The director of "The Goonies," Richard Donner, has been a staunch advocate of a new Goonies movie for instance.

With regard "Gremlins," it may be a bit easier to make since they are magical creatures. According to JoBlo, there is actually a writer making a script for the "Gremlins" reboot already.

When asked about the possible reboot of "Gremlins," Columbus says that the ideas surrounding the movie sound interesting. However, the project would not be a sequel but a reboot. Those who are not familiar with Gremlins, these are magical evil creatures who cause mischief and are spawned by their good counterpart, Gizmo, after certain conditions are met. The conditions include feeding Gizmo after midnight, getting him wet or exposing him to sunlight.

Both movie franchises have been stuck in developmental hell for several decades already due to various reasons. It may actually take Columbus' new movie, "Pixel," to get these movies out. If "Pixel" does well in both the domestic and international markets, the interest regarding both movies will likely be renewed. Movie studios may not be able to pass up the possible hundreds of million that either movie can make.
