The only thing more unpredictable than torrent winds hampering St. Andrews' throughout the 144th British Open is how a muddled leaderboard will fare once play resumes Monday morning.
Dustin Johnson teed off Sunday leading the storied tournament after 36 holes, but stellar efforts Irish amateur Paul Dunne, two-time Open champion Padraig Harrington, and reigning Master and U.S. Open champion Jordan Spieth dropped Johnson completely off the big board.
Twenty-five of 80 remaining players start the final round within five shots of the lead, and 14 are just three off the pace.
Spieth notched four birdies on his inward nine Sunday - shooting 6-under-par 66 for the day - and finished just one shot out of the lead. The 21-year-old Spieth would join Ben Hogan as the only players to win the Masters, U.S. Open and British open with a win on Monday, leaving him within a PGA championship of making history; becoming the only player to achieve an allusive Grand Slam.
Dunne is on the verge of making his own history; just 18 holes from becoming the first amateur to lift the Claret Jug since Bobby Jones in 1930.
An All-American at the University of Alabama-Birmingham, Dunne has been unfazed by the pressure of playing the Old Course alongside seasoned champions. He is tied with Jason Day and Louis Oosthuizen following a day when he matched Spieth's round of 6-under par.
