If healthy, Daniel Cormier could be part of UFC 192 where he will be pitted against Alexander Gustaffson.
Cormier is currently undergoing stem cell treatment for his injured knee, something he opted to do rather than undergo surgery. DC is practically walking around without an ACL and hopefully the platelet-rich-plasma procedure can suffice.
Though the procedure would mean that Cormier would be unable to train for six weeks, it is believed that he will have ample time to compete at UFC 192 against Gustaffson. And Cormier that such will be the case as he faces the no. 4 contender whom he believes he can conquer with a torn ligament.
Despite the positive outlook, there is still no certainty on whether Cormier will be given the green light to be at UFC 192. In fact, Cormier isn’t even sure yet if he will be fit enough by October 3.
“I don’t know if we will fight on October 3 yet. I’m just trying to force it... People already think it’s official, but it is not. I want to try to fight that day,” says Cormier.
Assuming that Cormier would be fit to compete, Cormier does think highly of Gustaffson in the technical aspect but believes that he still holds the edge over the Swedish mixed martial artist.
Facing someone who he considers a high-level boxer, Cormier intends to use his wrestling experience to gain an advantage over Gustaffson. Cormier intends to place the Swede in unusual situations and tire him out. He believes that with Gustaffson’s build, he can use wrestling maneuvers to tire out the no. 4 ranked fighter. In all, it seems that this tiff, if it materializes, will turn out into an ugly brawl.
Given the choice though, Cormier would have loved to face Ryan Bader instead. Bader will also be on hand at UFC 192 but will face Rashad Evans instead.
Cormier doesn’t mind the matchup, calling it a tournament style of a scenario which could end up seeing the winners of both face each other next.
However, a fighter that he is eager to face off is his arch nemesis, Jon Jones. Though currently facing legal battles, Cormier wants to settle an old score.
It seems that Cormier believes that he has yet to prove himself better than Jones, recalling two past tiffs which saw Cormier falling to Jones. In all, it seems to be a case of unfinished business.
If so, such a tiff could come in September, 2016 but all these are plans with nothing official made for now.
To make it more interesting, Cormier plans to put on the line something that will be of interest to Jon Jones – the title – which he promises to hold on to as long as he can to set up another heated clash that will hopefully materialize next year.
