Shortly after 11pm on Election Night, the networks called Ohio fro President Obama, and announced he would be president for another four years.
Four more years.
Just a short time later, the sentiment was emblazoned across social media, as the president's campaign tweeted a photo of Obama embracing the first lady with the caption "Four more years."
As of today, the photo has been retweeted over 794,000 times, and a copy cross-posted on Facebook has garnered over 3.5 million likes.
That makes the post the most retweeted of all time, and the photo the most-liked on Facebook of all time. It's the most popular image in social media history.
The pic shattered the previous record of just over 220,000, set by singer Justin Bieber in September.
The presidential election was the most-tweeted event in the site's history, with 31 million election-related tweets sent, more than three times the previous record, set by the first presidential debate. At the height of activity, more than 320,000 election tweets posted every minute.
The photo was actually taken in April, during a rally in Iowa. Obama looks tired but relieved as he hugs his wife, whose back is to the camera. She is wearing a red-and-white checkered dress; he has his dress shirt sleeves rolled up.
The Obama campaign has used social media masterfully in both elections, engaging audiences not typically reached by political advertising. Many young people don't have televisions or listen to the radio, but they use Twitter and Facebook constantly.
Some young voters were too young to elect Obama in 2008, but his message still reached them, making them easy converts this year.
