BBC just unveiled news of a Christmas special for its sensational television show, "Sherlock," to air this year. For a show that only has three episodes per season and only three seasons so far, "Sherlock" has lifted the careers of Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman to a new high.
Martin Freeman is well known for his role as Bilbo Baggins in the huge box office hit trilogy, "The Hobbit." As an inseparable duo, Benedict Cumberbatch was also in the trilogy as the voice of the Necromancer and the dragon Smaug. With the success of the trilogy and the "Sherlock" series, it is no wonder that both actors landed roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
By now, fans already know that Cumberbatch has already bagged the role of the Sorcerer Supreme in the coming Marvel movie, titled "Doctor Strange," which is set to come out on Nov 4, 2016. It was reported a few months ago that Freeman is set to play a non-super hero character in the upcoming Marvel movie "Captain America: Civil War." Further information about his role in the movie is hazy at best.
Now, let's focus on the tandem's return to the television scene. Historically, "Sherlock" has a rather unique scheduling model since it first aired back in July of 2010. Screen Rant reported that three ninety-minute episode every two years works well with the actors' busy schedule as well as an interconnecting miniseries story of Sherlock Homes (Cumberbatch) and Dr. John Watson (Freeman). Furthermore, the anticipation that builds up in between seasons gets fans more riled up.
What can build up the fans' anticipation even more than a full body promotional image of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson donning their Victorian era clothes?
While the previous seasons were set in modern day London, executive producer and showrunner, Steven Moffat, announced to Comic-Con last Thursday that "Sherlock" will have a Victorian version to air on the big screen, according to Deadline'. The executive director further shared that the Christmas special's plot will not be in continuity to the previous season and that the team behind the series is trying something new by returning to the era when the books were originally written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Additional news about the plot still remains elusive.
The series' showrunner assured fans that the 4th season of "Sherlock" will be a whole lot darker and the Christmas special will be the last time fans will see the happy side of Sherlock and John's lives.
The Christmas Special of "Sherlock" is expected to come out in December.
