Halo 4 has released to much fanfare, and so far the game looks to be shaping up as a worthy successor to the original Bungie Halo series. Continuing the story of Master Chief and Cortana, Halo 4 has drawn much praise for its campaign, but everybody knows that a shooter's multiplayer is what ultimately determines its appeal. If you're wondering about Halo 4's versus multiplayer modes, here they are.

There are two main modes - War Games, which is traditional versus multiplayer; and Spartan Ops, a co-operative play mode. The following list focuses on the types of War Games you can engage in with your friends (or enemies).

War Games Modes:

Capture the flag (CTF) - Traditional capture-the-flag gameplay. Try and grab the other team's flag and return to your base without them stealing yours.

Dominion - Capture one of three points around the map and hold them for defense upgrades. Once a team captures all three, they can eliminate the other team for a victory.

Extraction - Retrieve various objects from around the map by using a beacon. Be careful though, if the other team interrupts your extraction process, they can convert your extraction into theirs.

Flood - Similar to the previous 'Infection' mode. With a maximum of 10 players, two are infected, while the other eight must try to stay alive. Infected players will resemble the Flood and will attack using claws rather than an energy sword.

Grifball - A modified version of Assault in which team members using unlimited Energy Swords and Gravity Hammers try to escort their bomb carrier into the opposing team's base. An incredibly popular mode.

Slayer - Traditional deathmatch. Customize your settings, and try to rack up the kills.

Infinity Slayer - Similar to Slayer, only here players can earn points that can be used to call in some extra damage, armor, or speed.

King of the Hill - Classic shooter mode. Hold an area for as long as you can while the other team or players attempt to blow your head off.

Oddball - More team-oriented than before, the objective is to hold onto a skull for as long as you can without getting killed. Unlike previous Halos, however, you can pass it to teammates, making for a very sporty, bloody experience.

Regicide - Whoever is in first place is the king, and the longer he stays king, the more points whoever kills him gets. Oh, and there's an indicator on where the king migh be hiding, so expect everybody to converge at the same points on the map for some brutal firefights.

Which one of these modes is your favorite?
