The reruns of the long running television show, "Dukes of Hazzard," have been pulled from TV Land amidst the Confederate Flag Controversy.
The Confederate Flag has been in the public spotlight lately in lieu of the Charleston church massacre, where a white male came in a black church and shot the members of the local prayer group. The suspected killer supposedly had several images with the Confederate Flag. Sources also reported that the suspect, Dylan Roof, said on his website that he has negative opinions on other races such as "Blacks", "Jews" and "Eastern Asians."
The "Dukes of Hazzard" ran from 1979 to 1985 on CBS. The show revolved around two southern brothers and their "friend" Daisy Dukes. The two brothers constantly were in trouble with the law and were normally trying to escape in their car.
The Confederate Flag is prominent in the show even being painted on the show's iconic car, the General Lee. Ben Lee, who played Cooter in the 1980's hit television thinks that the removal of the hit show might be going too far. Lee states that he thinks that the fans of the show understand that the confederate battle is a symbol of the indomitable spirit of independence which lets us do what we do. Lee goes on to say that the confederate flag represents the values of the rural south which were courage, family and good times.
Fans of the show said that the Confederate Flag in show has no ties to racism at all. Many also say that if there is any inclination of racism in the show, then the show's characters were a wild pack of racist which many know is the farthest from the truth.
According to E Online, TV Land declined to elaborate on the decision on why "The Dukes of Hazzard" was pulled from their line-up. However, many experts believe it is to remove the Confederate Flag from pop culture considering that it has been connected to slavery and the Civil War.
"The Dukes of Hazzard" is just the first of many merchandising franchises that have been pulled since the Confederate Flag was removed from South Carolina's Capital Building. Variety claims that Warner Bros. is one of the many entities who have pledged to stop manufacturing Confederate Flag Imagery. Wallmart has also confirmed that they have removed the Confederate Flag from their shelves.
