Kevin Love is not heading anywhere and will keep his promise made during game 1 of the previously concluded NBA Finals.
The All Star forward stayed true to his word that he would be staying put in Cleveland after opting out of his last contract.
Both he and James opted out of their previous contracts but unlike James, there were anxious moments on what Love’s future plans. Many thought he was jumping ship, something traced to the fact that Love drew a lot of criticism last year for his brand of play and the fact that he and James weren’t exactly the best of friends.
Love will reportedly agree to a five-year $110 million deal with the Cavaliers and this was heavily supported by what he wrote via The Player’s Tribune.
This douses any hope on the end of the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics who were hoping to convince Love to join their organizations.
The Cavs made it clear that they intend to bring back most of the players from last season and that James and Love were of course the priorities.
Other players that the Cavs plan to give qualifying offers include Tristan Thompson, Iman Shumpert and Matthew Delladedova. The team had already exercised its option on Russian big man Timofey Mozgov, picking up his $5 million contract even before NBA Free Agency started.
J.R. Smith’s status is hanging after the veteran opted out of his contract.
As far as Love is concerned, he did admit that James played a big role in his decision.
"I did want to sit down with LeBron and just lay everything out there on the table," Love said in an interview.
Apparently this all happened when both were spotted hanging out at a hotel pool in Los Angeles.
Love opted not to do the usual free-agency tour, saying that he had already done the process in his head. To sum it all up, he made things easier and avoided the suspense and apparent complications had he held out on which direction he was really headed.
He also revealed his priorities – happiness, winning and money. He believes that all these are in Cleveland.
Love is expected to return by the time the 2015-16 NBA season unfolds. He sat out majority of the NBA playoffs after incurring a right shoulder injury during their first round meeting with the Boston Celtics.
