Kishan Yadav alleges that he was using his two-day old Apple iPhone 6 when the device started heating up and exploded during a call. Luckily, the owner states that he survived unharmed because he was using the hands-free mode.
Since the release of the iPhone 6 in India last year, no other instances of exploding iPhones were ever reported. This was the first case ever filed in the country.
Oceans away, a similar incident occurred. Just this February, CNN followed the story of a man named Eric Johnson from Long Island who received third-degree burns on his left thigh when his iPhone 5C went ablaze.
According to The Times of India, Yadav purchased the device from a leading gadget shop at Galleria market for 60,000 Rupees ($945) on June 18. He chose the 64GB variant in grey.
Kishan Yadav told The Times that he was in his car, talking to his friend on the phone, when he noticed sparks coming out of the device. He then promptly disposed of the iPhone 6 out his car window when he notice the mobile overheating and exploded as soon as it hit the ground.
"My face could have got burn as the phone exploded in a matter of seconds," Yadav told The Times. "When I threw the phone, the call was on and the battery was around 70 percent."
Last Monday, Kishan Yadav went back to the store where he purchased the Apple iPhone 6 from and was sent to the Apple service centre. Dissatisfied with the experience, he filed a police complaint and an FIR was registered.
